Yesterday, Saturday, the Tunisian opposition Salvation Front demanded the immediate release of all political detainees since mid-February, in what is known as the case of conspiracy against state security.
This came during a protest organized by the Salvation Front in Habib Bourguiba Street in the capital, Tunis.
During the vigil, dozens of demonstrators chanted slogans calling for the release of the detainees, and other slogans such as “national unity against the populist onslaught, overthrow the coup, a constitution for freedom and national dignity.”
Front member Samira Chawashi said, “Our message is clear in this stand, which is that we will not abandon those who were kidnapped and arrested for a word, that Tunisia accommodates everyone.”
Al-Shawashi mentioned – in a speech during the vigil – that the detainees are not conspirators and everyone knows that, but rather they were arrested for their opinions and political positions, so “we said and we say that they are political prisoners.”
Since February 11, Tunisia has witnessed a campaign of arrests that included politicians, media professionals, activists, judges, and businessmen. Qais Saied accused some of those arrested of “conspiring against state security and being behind the crises of goods distribution and high prices.”
Saied has repeatedly stressed the independence of the judicial authorities, but the opposition accuses him of using the judiciary to prosecute those who reject exceptional measures that began to be imposed on July 25, 2021, which left a severe political crisis.
