The National Interest: The Sudan crisis pushes Egypt to the brink of the abyss

The National Interest: The Sudan crisis pushes Egypt to the brink of the abyss

The American “National Interest” magazine expected that the fighting in Sudan would continue and cause more chaos outside the borders, especially in Egypt.

In a report, ıt added that thousands of people fleeing that war crawled towards Egypt, but it “is not the ideal safe haven, as it is currently suffering from an economic crisis, severe food shortages, and the depreciation of its currency, the Egyptian pound.”

According to the report, Egypt will face economic and security challenges due to the expected flight of hundreds of thousands of Sudanese to its borders, which is already suffering from difficult economic conditions.

The report goes on to say that the fighting in Sudan has “exposed the Egyptian nation to the danger of collapse, as it is not excluded that Egypt will experience the same events because of its fragile economic situation.”

In the past month, it was estimated that more than 90,000 Sudanese refugees left for Egypt, and the real numbers are likely to be much higher, with thousands waiting at the border without shelter, drinking water, or food to cross the border. However; Egypt itself is not the ideal safe haven, as it is currently suffering from an economic crisis, severe food shortages, and the depreciation of its currency, the Egyptian pound.

The fighting in Sudan may expose the Egyptian nation to the danger of collapse, as it is not excluded that it will know the same events due to its already fragile economic situation, so the possibility of increasing instability and conflict throughout the region is taken very seriously.

In this context, the United Nations has pledged $445 million to alleviate the crisis, which will be sent to countries receiving refugees across the region. The United States, in partnership with the European Union, should provide direct assistance to Egypt to ensure that Egyptians and refugees crossing the border have access to safe food sources. Additional foreign aid must also be provided to stabilize the Egyptian economy and the Egyptian pound.
