The family of colleague Hisham Abdel Aziz, a journalist for “Al-Jazeera Mubasher” channel, who is detained in Egyptian prisons, said that the Cairo authorities canceled the decision to release him, days after the issuance of an official decision to release him, according to a decision by the Public Prosecution, which was announced by lawyers, jurists and members of the Presidential Pardon Committee.
Samira Al-Taher, the wife of the detained Al-Jazeera journalist, stated in a tweet on her Twitter account, on Friday, that the lawyer informed her that the decision to release Hisham Abdel Aziz was canceled “as if it had not happened.” The lawyer added that: the detainee is still imprisoned pending case No. 1956 of 2019. in which he is the only accused
Case No. 1956 of 2019 related to the file of “assisting a terrorist group in achieving its objectives.”
Al-Taher added that by next June, Hisham Abdel Aziz will complete 4 years in pre-trial detention.
An Egyptian court ruled at the end of last March to extend the detention of three Al-Jazeera Mubasher journalists, who have been detained for years without trial, for an additional 45 days.
The decision to extend included colleagues Hisham Abdel Aziz, Bahaa El Din Ibrahim, and Rabi El Sheikh.
The Egyptian security arrested both Hisham Abdel Aziz and Rabi El Sheikh during a family visit to Cairo.
Last February, Al Jazeera Media Network staff organized a solidarity stand in Doha to condemn the Egyptian authorities’ continued detention of the three colleagues of Al Jazeera Mubasher.
In a statement issued at the time, the network expressed its deep concern for the safety of its journalists, who are being held without trial in cells that lack the most basic conditions of health and hygiene, which constitutes a real threat to their safety and endangers their lives, in light of their suffering from chronic diseases.
The detention of Al-Jazeera Mubasher journalists sparked criticism of the Egyptian authorities by Western capitals and international organizations, which demanded their release.
