Statement on the events in Brazil

Statement on the events in Brazil

The Morsi Foundation for Democracy followed the escalating events in Brazil, the latest of which was yesterday, Sunday, January 8, 2023.

Hundreds of supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro stormed the presidential palace, the Congress building, and the Federal Court Square in the capital, Brasilia, demanding the armed forces intervene to isolate the elected president, Lula da Silva, in violation of democracy and its norms by violating the law and the constitution.

The Foundation affirms its support for democracy and freedom and rejects all kinds of chaos and coups that target and threaten the entire democratic path.

The Foundation also congratulates the Brazilian President and his government for the people’s restoration of control over the presidential and government headquarters, and for thwarting the failed coup attempt.

Finally, the Foundation stresses the need to adhere to the democratic process and its outcomes, to respect the choices of free peoples, and to reject any means that would circumvent, deviate from, or turn against these choices.
