The head of the Libyan National Unity Government, Abd al-Hamid al-Dabaiba, affirmed his government’s continued commitment to creating the appropriate conditions to “end the transitional stages” by holding fair and impartial elections.
Dabaiba pledged to continue his commitment to serving the Libyans and “creating the appropriate conditions for holding elections and ending the transitional stages” that continued in 2011.
His confirmation came – during the fourth cabinet meeting of 2023 in the city of Misrata – according to what was broadcast by the “Our Government” platform on Facebook.
The head of the national unity government added that the current stage requires everyone to continue their adherence to the option of peace, the peaceful transfer of power, and the establishment of a stable situation that enhances the chances of successful elections whose results are accepted by all parties.
During the same meeting, which he attended for the first time, President of the Presidential Council Muhammad al-Munfi said that his council was “ready to assist the government in its efforts to alleviate the suffering of citizens.”
Al-Munfi added that the government “aims to create a stable environment through which it can reach elections in the near future.”
Two governments are fighting over power in Libya, one headed by Fathi Bashagha and assigned by the House of Representatives in Tobruk (east) early last year, and the other recognized by the United Nations, which is the unity government headed by Dabaiba, who refuses to hand over power except to a government assigned by a new elected parliament.
To solve this crisis, the United Nations launched an initiative to hold elections, but it faltered, before its envoy Abdullah Batili launched, on February 27, a new initiative aimed at reaching elections in 2023.
