The number of Turks abroad who cast their votes in the run-off for the presidential elections reached 1,912,030, according to what the Anatolia News Agency reported on the authority of Turkey’s Supreme Elections Authority on Friday evening.
This number includes the votes of expatriates at the headquarters of Turkish diplomatic missions abroad – in which polling took place between May 20 and 24 this year – and the votes of Turks at the border crossings, where voting continues until 17:00 (14:00 GMT) on Sunday when the elections are held inside Turkey.
This outcome exceeds the number of foreign votes in the first round of the elections, which amounted to 1,839,470 voters, including about 148,000 who cast their votes at the border crossings from airports and crossings.
The Turkish presidential and parliamentary elections were held on May 14, when the candidate of the Public Alliance, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the candidate of the opposition People’s Alliance, Kamal Kilicdaroglu, and the candidate of the Grandfathers’ Alliance, Sinan Ogan, competed for the presidency.
The Supreme Elections Commission announced a run-off between Erdogan and Kilicdaroglu on May 28, as no candidate received more than 50% of the vote.
Erdogan won 49.51% of the vote, Kilicdaroglu won 44.88%, and Sinan Ogan 5.17%, according to the final results announced by the commission.
